QUESTION:
[FINAL, 2009] BMW 328xi Coupe vs Lexus IS250 AWD?
So from a question I've posted earlier, I've eliminated the G37x and A4 Quattro. Now it's down to the BMW 328xi Coupe or the Lexus IS250 AWD. I really can't choose anymore, because both have their own pros and cons, and right now it is a very hard decision. Here are some points that I know for myself, hope you guys can give some advices as well. Please don't just say "Get the bimmer!" or "Lexus ftw!", I'd appreciate it if you guys can give some reasons on why choose this one over the other. Thanks in advance! So far these are what I've discovered...
- I'm getting a pretty sweet deal on both, so price isn't problem
- xDrive is superior to the AWD system from Lexus, especially in terms of handling in winter conditions (I live in Canada, so this matters)
- Lexus isn't as much of a gas killer as the BMW, save more money?
- Lexus is the most reliable brand, and has world #1 service
- BMW is technically the best car brand there is (as opposed to Mercedes-Benz which started to decline after being bought off by Chrysler)
- the Lexus comes with more features as standard than the BMW
- Lexus' backseats cannot be folded down, whereas BMW can (more cargo space)
- BMW doesn't need a spare tire (run flat tire) and hence even more cargo space
- I'll be ballin' in a BMW coupeRight now I'm fine with either one, but I guess I'm mainly depending on which one I can get a better deal from. Obviously I'm expecting a cheaper deal from Lexus but if the BMW is worth that extra bucks, then I'd still choose it.
ANSWER:
These are both great cars. I am a BMW fan myself and would probably go with it. It may be more expensive but they are the ultimate driving machine The 3 series also just had a redesign where as the lexus's body has been around without a refresh for a while. The bmw has more unique features such as the runflats you mentioned. I have heard nothing but good things about the xDrive system. In my opinion if the financial standpoint can be worked out, without a doubt go bimmer.
QUESTION:
Can I sue a used car dealer that said the car was in manfact warranty after bringing it to Canada from the US?
I bought an US BWM from a Canadian dealer; they said that all the documentation to register the car was completed as well as the Canadian conversion, and they also charged me a fee for all this. They also said the car was under manufacturer warranty till 80,000 kms.The car has 60,000 kms right now so I took it to the BMW dealer to get a light fixed and they found out that this car was not properly converted to a Canadian car and that I will need to change the dash and some other stuff so that the warranty is valid in Canada. Whatever they need to do to the car is going to cost $ 3000.
The dealer seems to have no idea of what I'm talking about and said they will have to research but they think they cant do anything about it, they just told me that the service rep was trying to get more commission. However I called the customer service at BMW and indeed all the changes to the car are necessary to get the warranty.
Should I sue the dealer for selling me car that was under manufacturer warranty but it wasn't?

QUESTION:
Which automotive company would be best to apprentice with?
I am in the midst of trying to get an apprenticeship as an Automotive Service Technician in Alberta, Canada, and I would like to specialize in a particular brand of vehicle. So far I am considering BMW or perhaps Mercedes-Benz. However, I would be willing to apprentice with another make if it was worth it. Which company would be best to work for and provide the most opportunities? Please don't post hyper-biased opinions, but answers based on empirical evidence and experience would be best. Thank you!ANSWER:
I apprenticed in a multi line dealer in the early 80's I went to a Junior college and went threw there automotive program. I was lucky to have the best around the corner. Today I believe its a bit harder.I am a service writer manager at a dealership now. Here in silicon valley its who you know. I know BMW had a program with different Tech training facility's (trade school) that sounded excellent apparently gettin in the program and doing well will get you a job. Starting at a quality service dept will help you to be a quality tech. A real apprentice ship takes approx 4 years and includes going threw a formal training . Good luck.
QUESTION:
Can I succesfuly bring BMW to court?
The start of my vacation the battery died in my BMW and I could not start it. I called roadside assistance for a tow to the dealership. I was put through to several different reps all of which were un helpful and said to work it out with the dealership. I was on my way to pick up two other people and catch a flight. I needed to go!! Instead the service manager at the dealership refused to give a courtesy car because I was going to be gone on vacation for a week, refused to provide rental car refused to shuttle us to the airport from canada to US. They left us to fend for our self. I was on the the phone for 2.5 hours with bmw and all I received was a runaround. As a result I had to pay to rent a vehicle for a week (which sat parked at the airport the whole time), we missed our flights and 2 had to be repurchased and had to pay to stay in a hotel overnight since we missed our flight. all together it is several thousand dollars in expenses that I had to pay.BMW neglected to provide assistance and make sure we were taken care of. They have a so called trip interruption insurance which Submitted claims to and it was denied because I wasn't 100 miles from home.
Long story short is that I want to know how I can successfully get BMW to reimburse me for the expenses I incurred as a result of BMW refusing to help.
ANSWER:
It would not be BMW but rather the dealership (most are franchises). You could have returned the car at the airport, so I don't think that's going to be reimbursable. You could try to sue them in small claims court for the other actual expenses.
QUESTION:
BMW 320 / 328i running costs high?
I keep hearing that running costs / maintenance costs are high when it comes to BMW. But no one specifically compares it with any car so that I could get a clear idea. I could assume that the high costs are due to the services that NEEDS to be done at BMW itself. Is this correct? If possible can anyone give me a comparison ?
I am interested in buying a used 2000 - 320 or 328i
I am from Canada, if that helps.
ANSWER:
I have a 1996 328iC. It is not expensive to keep on the road. It has 147,000 miles on it. I don't use a BMW dealer. There are lots of independent BMW service places. Some are expensive, but some are great value. Talk to other owners in your area, and you'll find out who provides the best service at the best price. The 328 is a great engine, better to go with the 328 than the 320.
